We ventured to the Killing Fields yesterday and Tuol Sleng prison. Whoah! The last time I was here, 4 years ago, the Killing Fields did NOT look like this! They've built a lot around it. There is a museum with it now. It is still just as horrifying though. I won't go into detail, but we were talking on the bus as to why this genocide is so difficult to cope with. It wasn't long ago, America had an "interesting" role to say the least (google it), and it is still unsettled. Just last year, in 2010, they finally convicted one of the main leaders who admitted to allowing so many deaths. (picture of him below) BUT-while in prison, he also became a believer and agreed that whatever punishment they gave him he deserved because of all that he did. His name is "Duch". Look him up.
We had lunch at Jacob's Well which was another Non-Profit that helps provide cooking skills/jobs to the Khmer. The food was delicious.... especially the fish sticks! ha.
Then we went to the House of Hope Orphanage (I think that's it) where the children performed for us and we toured the orphanage. This place is NICE! PCL knows how to do it right! The children are B-E-A-UTIFUL! We also gave them bags and items that schools in America had put together for them. They loved their soccer ball. :)
Our boat ride was cancelled due to the small monsoon that undertook us. But-we did have excellent pizza with a lot of our new Khmer friends. My roomie Andrea and I then went and got a foot and shoulder massage for an hour.... for $8! Which was absolutely, hands down, the best massage I have ever received. I mean.... I was at the level of falling asleep and periodically jerking... you know how that is when you're really tired?
It's been great so far, except that I might have just blown my straightener. Don't judge if all you see is my hair up in a bun. Gotta get creative with the hair dos! I would write more but I have to eat breakfast and I'm running late. Just a few pics below... and yes, that would be our fearless leader Jake.
